What to expect at the LS Ice Cream Social

Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Lower School families have undoubtedly marked their calendars for the ever-anticipated Ice Cream Social, which will take place on Monday, August 20th at 5pm.  For new families, this can be a somewhat nerve-wracking event, both for kids and parents— so, in hopes of alleviating some of your concerns, the PACA bloggers wanted to give you an idea of what to expect:
The Ice Cream Social is located on the grassy area between the playground and the main administration building.  Parking is sure to be at a premium, so feel free to get creative and don't hesitate to grab the first space available.

The teachers will be arranged by grade— upon arrival, walk to the check-in table, make a name tag and ask to be directed to the appropriate area.  If you have a Pre-K student, you will be congregating on the Kindergarten playground, which is slightly off the beaten path, but gives the little ones a calmer environment to get acclimated.

If you are new to the school, plan to arrive early! This will give you ample opportunity to meet and greet your child's teachers as well as the room parent.  As the afternoon unfolds, chaos will reign- mass quantities of people catching up from summer events, kids running all over aided by large quantities of sugar consumption—you get the picture.

Bring your calendar and some way to jot down a few notes.  Many classrooms will want parents to sign up for the first teacher conferences and you want to be prepared to schedule those, as well as to write down any emails or cell phones from other families that you meet.

Make sure to get your car pool tags. This will make life far easier when you pick up your child on the first afternoon of school.  If you are carpooling, make sure to exchange tags with the other family, so you have both last names ready to go in your car. Tip: extra large binder clips are an excellent way to attach carpool name tags to your passenger side visor.  Flip them down for pick-up, flip them up when you're done.  Nice and tidy.

This is an uber-casual event. Do not worry about getting you or your child dressed-up; this is a laid back affair for everyone!

If you are looking for school logo merchandise, the Viking Corner will be there with a full contingent of shirts, sweats, etc., so bring your wallet.

If you have other questions or concerns about the ice cream social, please feel free to contact us or leave a comment on the blog and we'll be happy to get back with you!
