The year was 1980 and a kindly new receptionist graced Academy Hall. Quickly becoming part of the CA community, she wanted her son, Tom, to join the Viking ranks; several years later, he did and entered seventh grade as a member of the Class of '88. Along with Tom, CA welcomed yet another member into the Academy fold: Tom's dad.
Energetic, loud and boisterous, Tom's dad quickly became known on campus; he was a fixture at school events, on the sidelines and in the stands— he was a charismatic salesman and his favorite product was the outstanding education and community of the Columbus Academy. Although he was active in the Father's Association and a plethora of other volunteer roles, perhaps his greatest gift was sharing his open devotion and pride in his son's school. He was a dashing, stylish figure that came to represent CA's quest for excellence on the field, in the classroom and for the future.
Tom's dad was Charlie David.
Today, his legacy lives on through the dinner that now bears his name. You see, Charlie David started a small chicken dinner to be held before the Homecoming game. He envisioned a family event and organized a few dads to raise a little money and create a nice atmosphere before the football game. Now in its 30th year, the Charlie David Dinner raises more than 40k annually to support athletics and recreation for the entire school.
All divisions benefit from these funds, as proceeds have paid for new playgrounds, gym equipment, uniforms— anything and everything to keep our CA kiddos healthy, active and pursuing the school's mission in support of every student's mind, body and character.
If you are looking to support the Academy community at its most honest, most grass-roots level, this is the one event you should attend. Hands down. There is something for everyone:
Dinner from Bob Evans and Hoggy's
Games in the gym for the youngest kids
Silent auction and raffle
Football (let's beat the Lions!)
Live music
Tickets are $10 per person, kids age six and under are free. The date is Friday, October 5th and dinner is from 5-730 in the CA Dining Hall. If you would like to be a sponsor for the event, you can get more info here.
Come. Be part of the community— be part of the legacy that is Charlie David.
